Repair composite (non-metallic repair) is an innovative technology, an alternative to conventional methods.
The composite material consisting of two or more components which act in concert with each other in order to achieve the best results. In general, composites consist of two components:
- Reinforcing fibers (glass, carbon or synthetic), transfer of stress
- Resin matrix (epoxy, vinyl or urethane) fiber assemblage and ensures a good grip.
Repair composites are an excellent way to combat external corrosion, slow down the process of internal corrosion, eliminate cracks, fill cavities following damage to mechanical, chemical and others – rebuild the structure of the wall. They can be used for various kinds of forms (simple pipelines, tanks, T-pieces, valves etc.). Their biggest advantage is short repair time, without shutting down the installation or by lowering the pressure.
The advantages of using composites
- Extend service life of a piping system and restore the originals parameters of the wall
- Possible to apply on working installations
- In conformity with standards: ACI, API, ASME and ISO ( for non-metallic repairs)
- Could be applied as temporary and long-term repairs
- Packaging comfortable, fast and handy for use
- Non-toxic, incombustible
- Cost effective alternative, application with minimum of working hours engagement
Before you use the composite
- SURFACE PREPARATION
The composte repairs demands a strong adhesive bond between the clean pipe and the composite system, therefore the surface preparation and profiling shall promote continuous intimate contact between the CFRP system and pipe by providing a clean, smooth, and circumferential surface.
Before using the composite, the surface should be perfectely cleaned, dried (unless we deal with the repair in the aquatic environment and use for this purpose special composites systems that do not require draining surface).
Remove any visible traces of dirt: oil, grease, soil, loose associations of rust, splinters, etc. Purification is done by using appropriate techniques possible to use, depending on installation parameters, environment, safety requirements. Purification can be done by sandblasting, grinding, scraping or using others equipments, such as spark-free. Bristle Blaster. After cleaning, degrease the surface, with ex acetone or any other solvent.
The exact requirements for surface preparation are given by the manufacturer, or in the case of engineering systems by appropriate report.
It is recommended that abrasive blasting according to SSPC-SP10 “NACE 2 “Near White Blast Cleaning” However, as the minimum required surface preparation should be in accordance with SSPC-SP1 “Cleaning with solvent” and “SSPC-SP11” Cleaning to bare metal using electrical tools “for the provision of surface roughness of at least 1-3 miles (roughness 25-76 microns) . If the condition of the pipe (also the site of defect) does not allow for compliance with SSPC-SP11
Standards relating to the preparation of the surface, “SSPC-SP12 / NACE 5 Surface Preparation and Cleaning of Steel and Other Hard Materials by High- and Ultra High- Pressure Water Jetting Prior to recoating”.
- STORAGE CONDITIONS
Store indoors in cool, dry, ventilated storage at temperatures below 35°C in original, unopened containers.
For preimpregnated systems, open the packaging just before using ( the composite in the normal environmental temperature can fast cured) Apply ventilation and protection cloths.
- FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION OF USE
IT IS Strictly recommanded to follow the instructions included with the product, or (in the case of engineering systems) comply strictly with the calculation report (not recommended to reduce the number of layers of bandage, quantity, etc.).
